Clocking in and out
Every shift in OrderUp starts and ends on the Time Clock screen. Clocking in records the start of your shift, picks the job you're working as (if you have more than one), and unlocks the rest of the POS.
Time entries flow straight into Management for your manager to review and into payroll for accurate paychecks.
Sign in with your PIN
When the POS is idle, it returns to the Employee PIN screen. To start your shift:
- Tap your name in the employee list (or scan your card if your business uses badge scanners).
- Enter your 4-to-6 digit PIN on the on-screen keypad.
- The POS validates your PIN and shows a brief welcome before routing you forward.
If you forget your PIN, ask a manager to reset it from Management → Staff → Employees. They can issue a one-time PIN that you'll change on next sign-in.
Pick your job and clock in
After PIN entry, the POS lands on the Time Clock screen. The left side shows the current time and your name; the right side shows your time entries for today and for the rest of the week.
To clock in:
- Open the Job dropdown and pick the job you're working today (Server, Bartender, Line Cook, etc.). The dropdown is locked while you're already on the clock — you can only change jobs by clocking out and clocking back in.
- Tap Clock In. The clock starts immediately and your entry appears in Today's shifts.
If your business has only assigned you one job, OrderUp selects it for you and the dropdown is hidden.
Take a break
Breaks are tracked inside the same time entry as your shift, so your paid hours stay accurate.
- Tap Take Break when you step away. Your shift entry shows a running break.
- Tap End Break when you return. The break duration is added to the entry.
You can take more than one break in a single shift. Each one is recorded separately and visible to your manager when they review your time card.
End your shift
When you're done for the day:
- Wrap up any open checks. The POS warns you if there are checks that haven't been closed — settle or transfer them before you clock out.
- Open the Time Clock screen (Settings menu → Time Clock, or the user icon in the top-right corner).
- Tap Clock Out.
OrderUp records the clock-out time, calculates your total hours (minus breaks), and finalizes the entry. The shift moves from Today's open shifts into the closed list, where it stays visible for the rest of the week.
When something's wrong with your time card
If you forgot to clock out, took a break that wasn't recorded, or your hours look incorrect, don't try to fix it yourself. Time entries are protected to keep payroll accurate.
Ask your manager to review the entry in Management → Staff → Time entries. Managers can:
- Edit a forgotten clock-out.
- Add a missed break.
- Approve or correct the hours before payroll runs.
Every edit is logged with the manager's name and timestamp, so there's a clear audit trail.
What you'll do next
After you clock in, the POS routes you to your business's home screen — usually Quick Order for counter service or Table Service for full-service restaurants. From there, see Taking orders.
At the end of the night, before you clock out, your manager will likely run End of day to settle the day's sales and counts.
