Where a tip is attributed
A tip belongs to the transaction that carried it, and the transaction belongs to the order's server of record.
Two consequences worth knowing before you audit a tip report:
- Transferring an order moves its tips. If a server hands a table over, the tips follow the order, not the person who first rang it in.
- A tip added after payment only exists where the payment was left open for it. See Tips.
Pooling
Tip pooling collects tips into a pool and distributes them by a rule — evenly, by hours worked, or by a points system, depending on your configuration.
Pooling is configured in Management. It affects reporting and, where payroll is connected, what people are actually paid — so changes to a pooling rule are worth making between pay periods rather than inside one.
Cash tips
Cash tips declared at the till are recorded against the employee and flow into tip reporting. Undeclared cash is, by definition, invisible to the system.
Reporting
Tip reports break down by employee and by period. If a tip report looks wrong, check in this order:
- Was the order transferred? Tips moved with it.
- Was the tip taken before or on the receipt? Receipt tips are entered later and appear once captured.
- Is the period the one you think? Reports bucket by the restaurant's own time zone, not the browser's.
