Add your first restaurant

A restaurant in OrderUp is one physical location. You can add as many as you need under a single business (tenant), and each one keeps its own hours, menu pricing, tax rates, payment processor, and staff schedule.

This page walks you from an empty business to a POS that's ready to take its first order.

1. Create the location

Sign in to app.letsorderup.com and open Settings → Locations → Add location.

Fill in the basics:

  • Restaurant name — The customer-facing name (e.g., Pier 7 Café — Downtown).
  • Street address — Used on receipts and the ordering site.
  • Time zone — Critical. Reports, scheduling, and online ordering hours all run on this clock.
  • Currency — Inherited from your business, but can be overridden per location.
  • Phone number — Appears on receipts and the ordering site.

When you save, the new restaurant appears in the location switcher in the top-left corner of Management. You'll spend most of your time scoped to a single location at a time.

2. Set hours and service modes

Open Settings → Restaurant settings → Hours & service. Set:

  • Operating hours by day of week.
  • Service modes you support: dine-in, takeout, delivery, curbside, catering. Each one can be on or off and can have its own hours.
  • Holiday schedule — Override regular hours for a specific date (Thanksgiving, a private buyout, etc.).

3. Connect payment processing

OrderUp processes credit and debit cards through CardConnect. To accept payments you'll need a CardConnect Merchant ID (MID). If you don't have one yet, your OrderUp onboarding contact will help you apply.

In Management:

  1. Open Settings → Payments & currency → Card processing.
  2. Enter your MID and the credentials your processor provided.
  3. Add at least one card reader (Bluetooth or Ethernet, depending on the model).
  4. Run the built-in test charge to confirm everything is wired correctly.

For a full walkthrough including reader pairing and refund permissions, see the Payments section once your MID is approved.

4. Build your menu

OrderUp's menu is the source of truth for the POS, the ordering site, the menu boards, and the kitchen display. Build it once, use it everywhere.

In Management → Menu, create them in this order:

  1. Categories — Top-level groupings (Breakfast, Lunch, Drinks).
  2. Items — The dishes themselves, with price, description, allergens, and a photo.
  3. Modifier groups — Reusable add-ons (size, milk choice, sauce on the side).
  4. Tags — Flags for quick filtering on the POS (vegan, GF, 86'd).

Multi-location groups can build a master menu at the business level and then enable per-location pricing or visibility overrides — handy when downtown costs more than the suburbs.

For a deeper dive, including pricing rules and 86'd-item handling, see the menu management guide in the Management section.

5. Pair your first POS device

The POS app runs on iPad and Android tablets. Once installed:

  1. Open the app on the tablet. It boots into a device pairing screen and shows a 6-digit pairing code.
  2. In Management, open Settings → Devices → Pair device.
  3. Enter the code and give the device a friendly name (e.g., Front register).
  4. Choose the location it belongs to and the home screen it should boot into (Quick Order, Table Service, or Kitchen Display).

The tablet will reload, sync your menu, and land on the Employee PIN screen, ready for your team to clock in.
