Printers

Two jobs, often two printers

  • Receipt printers print the guest's bill and card slip. Usually at the till or the bar.
  • Kitchen printers print chits. On the line, often more than one.

One printer can do both, but a busy kitchen printer holding up a guest's receipt is a bad afternoon.

Adding a printer

  1. Connect it to the store network.
  2. Add it in Management → Devices.
  3. Associate it with the prep stations that should print to it — see Routing to stations.
  4. Print a test.

Cash drawers

A cash drawer is usually wired to a printer and opens when that printer receives the signal. In OrderUp this means a drawer is configured as an attachment to a printer, not as a device of its own.

Note that "cash drawer" means two separate things:

  • The hardware — the physical box, attached to a printer, which pops open.
  • The financial record — the session of counting, paying in and paying out that ties to your books.

They share a name and are configured in different places. A drawer that will not open is a hardware-and-printer question; a drawer that does not balance is a financial one.

Receipt content

Receipts carry your restaurant's name, address, phone and — where configured — your website. The website line resolves to your published site if you have one, and to your ordering page otherwise. An unpublished site does not appear, because the link would 404.

When a printer will not print

See the ordered checklist in Printers and chits. The most common cause is not the printer at all — it is an item with no routing.
