Channel visibility

The same menu serves several channels:

  • the POS — what staff can ring in
  • online ordering — your own ordering page
  • delivery marketplaces — DoorDash, Uber Eats and the rest
  • menu boards — in-store digital signage

Menu groups, items, modifier groups and individual modifiers can each be switched off for a channel without being removed from the menu.

The default is visible

If a channel flag has never been set on something, it is offered on every channel. Visibility is only withheld when it has been explicitly switched off.

This matters when auditing an older menu: an item with no online-ordering flag at all is online, and looks identical in the data to one deliberately left on.

Switching something off

Open the group, item, modifier group or modifier and switch off the channel you want it withheld from. The change takes effect at your next publish.

What "off for a channel" actually does

An item switched off for online ordering:

  • does not render on the ordering page
  • cannot be added to a cart by any route, including a stale link or a deep link
  • is refused at checkout if it somehow reaches there

That last point is the important one. Visibility is enforced at the point of charge, not only at the point of display — so a guest cannot be charged for something your website was not offering.

Modifier groups follow the same rule

A modifier group switched off online will not appear in the item's online dialog, and the item remains orderable without it. If the group was required, be deliberate: the online guest now gets the item without a choice the kitchen may be expecting.

A quick audit

Before a busy service, spot-check one item per channel:
